I had a lot of fun at work today! Igot  to set up a viscometer. It is a pretty delicate piece of machinery so I am watched how to videos on the brookfield website. It was super neato! I learned lots!

Whie I watched the videos I ate two packets of oats! I combined maple nut and Flax Plus. It was good, but too much for me. I couldn’t quite finish it. I was tempted to measure the viscosity of my leftover oatmeal with the viscometer, but I refrained.

my view for the day

my view for the day

Actually I wasn’t stuck at my desk all day. I left work a little bit early…ok a lot early because it was sunny and I wanted to ride my bike (it was supposed to start raining again at 3 pm)!!!  But hey, I was working extra today anyway.

I liked biking a lot and it is no wonder that road bikers are fit. My heart rate was way high (175 bpm) when I was just going up a slight incline. This could be mostly due to the fact that my front brake got stuck, but still a good workout! I live in a really hilly area so I think I am going to take my bike to the beach with me next week to practice on something a little flatter. It is going to take some getting used to. Balancing the bike while changing gears and going uphill does not come naturally to me.  I am so excited I finally got to ride! I stopped after about 15 minutes so my landlord could fix my front brake. I might head out again here soon.

Enjoy your day I hope the weather is nice wherever you are!

cool medieval font… boysenberries of yore

After I P90Xed I wanted to ride my bike on the trainer for a little while. Unfortunately, I can’t quite figure out how to prevent the back tire and magnetic unit from getting really hot and producing a burning smell. I had to turn the resistance all the way down to prevent it and it made for a frustrating time. Even in the hardest gears I felt like it was way too easy to pedal. Oh well, Im sure I’ll get it figured out eventually. Does anyone have any tips?

After that disappointment I scrounged for some food. I really didn’t want to eat that pasta mix from the other day again so I ate random things. I wasn’t satified so I just kept eating. I had a passion fruit snack from Trader Joe’s. I accidentally deleted the picture…oops.

A Bowl of Pacific brand Cashew coconut soup (way too sweet) with 1/2 small block of baked tofu at the bottom. The tofu helped make it better, still won’t be buying it again.

I am positively going to to grocery today because I want to make a yummy couscous salad!

I am working as much as possible this week to make up for my road bike and anthropologie purchases, so no thursday off for me. I don’t mind though. I am going on vacation soon so I should get caught up on work as much as possible.

While at work I had my usual breakfast (in a brand spanking new IKEA bowl). I tried a packet of apple cinnamon granola this morning and it was creamy and not too sweet. There was no artifical apple flavor which was nice. It was just a subtle hint because of the dried fruit. I added a tablespoon of PB to make it last longer. I still think the Flax Plus is my favorite flavor.

For lunch I had leftovers from the other night…boooring but filling. Penne with veggie, beans, and tomato sauce. I am probably going to end up eating this for dinner too because I need to buckle down and get a lot of my AMCAS application done before vacay.

I also brought some snacks, of course. I had a maple cookie..then two more maple cookies. I figure the sugar will fuel me through the last couple hours of work and my workout.

It is shoulders and arms today. I love how pumped up my arms feel during and after this workout. I almost look like I have guns which is really exciting since I have never had any definition in my arms before (I am a spindly Sri Lankan). It is actually one of the easier workouts in my opinion because it is pretty much all weights and resistance exercises, no pull ups.

On my way home I snacked on some gummies because they were in the car. Surf Sweets Gummi Swirls are pretty tasty and contain lots of calcium (take that adora…hehe just kidding). I ate the last five in the bottom of the bag.

I updated the page “Who is Spicygranola”, so check it out if you feel so inclined!

Brainstorm Time!

So, I have been thinking about different directions I can take with this blog. I would like to maintain the food portion and bulk up the fitness part (teehee pun). Also, there are a couple bloggers I would like to interview on different topics once I get more established. Finally, I thought it might be cool for me to do posts on some chronic diseases (ex. Diabetes), or vitamins, or chemicals of concern (like BPAs from plastic). I would love doing and sharing research on these topics and getting to prevent the scientific part of my brain from atrophying. If you are interested in this possible new direction and/or have potential topics for me to explore please leave a comment.

Charlotte

I feel like this summer is already flying by! Today certainly did. I got off from work to accompany my family to Charlotte for some business stuff. I was super stoked because we also made it to anthropologie and ikea! My two favorite stores.

I got picked up this morning and suprised by breakfast from Earth Fare. It was a Green Goddess smoothie (green from spirulina) and a vegan maple nut muffin. Major YUM! The muffin was still warm from the oven.

After taking care of the business stuff we checked out Zada Janes at that suggestion of Kelsey at Bites + Bowls. It was a cute colorful little place with a very varied menu. I wish I had taken more pictures of it. There was some great artwork.  I got the East meets Western Tofu scramble. It was seasoned with yellow indian curry. It was pretty good, but I have to admit I am more partial to the tofu scramble at Rosetta’s in Asheville. Of course, it is easy to forget how spoiled I am living in Asheville. Pretty much every restaurant has  healthy and creative veggie options (two or three at least).

After lunch and hitting up anthropologie (YAY sale= four new shirts) we went to Trader Joe’s. I got some goodies that will appear on the blog over the next few days, but I’m too tired to post it all now. I did eat and share some Maple Cookies in the car. They were way too sweet and 110 calories a piece! I don’t really care about that, I was just suprised because they aren’t very big.

Last stop was IKEA where I had a blackcurrant swedish soda. It was good but I couldn’t finish it so I shared the rest. I got several new bowls and plates in the damaged goods discount section so I can have some more variety for food pictures. I can’t figure out why they were discounted, I couldn’t see anything wrong with them, but at $0.59 I was willing to take their word for it.

Then we were back in Ashevegas for a late dinner. We hit up the China Palace and I got my usual, seasme tofu. It is so good, but so fried and covered in a sweet sauce. It is not a healthy choice, but I shared it with my mom who split her broc in garlic sauce with me. I love chinese food and our waiter was amusing.

Sorry for the lameish post I am really tired, but didn’t want to lose momentum. I didn’t workout today, so I will just take today as my rest day and pick back up tomorrow. I am hoping for sun so I can take the bike for a spin!

Because I want to ride by bike!

That mattar tofu didn’t hold me over for very long last night so I misbehaved and ate some food around 11pm. I had some really good crackers and another Cliff tropical twisted fruit (you have to try these).

I am working late today so I am trying to space my food out so I can work out immediately when I get home (sadly, it will still be too wet and rainy to bike). So I had half a banana (not pictured, use your imagination) when I woke up and then a big bowl of oatmeal around 10 am so I can eat lunch later then usual. I tried another of those Nature’s Path flavors. It was maple nut. I can’t honestly review it because I added the other half of my banana and a small tablespoon of crunchy peanut butter to bulk it up. Regardless, it was good and filling. It was a little too sweet but I don’t know if that was the very ripe banana or the oat mix.

I did end up eating lunch late, even later then I intended because I got stuck in the lab. My boy came to visit for a second and I was grumpy with him. He took it really well and just told me that I needed to eat. He knows me so well…and yet still puts up with me. It defies logic, thank goodness. Anyways lunch was another frozen indian meal. I feel guilty for eating them two days in a row, but the ingredient lists have been very respectable. Today was chickpea curry with potato cakes. It was yummy but high calorie for such a small dish.

Because it was so small and because I waited so late to eat I still feel hungry. Good thing I brought snacks!

I had a bit of granola and a fruit leather (not pictured…oops)

When I got home I did the p90x Plyometric workout. It is the toughest one! My heart rate was way up during all of the exercises.  You just jump jump jump until you can’t anymore. I took it a little easy today and skipped a couple exercises (only easy ones that I don’t like much) so I would still have enough energy to bike. After plyo I stuck my bike on my magnetic trainer and spun for about twenty minutes. I didn’t go hard, I was mostly trying to get a feel for the fit of the bike and get used to changing gears. I think I will be happy when I have a new saddle and perhaps a shorter stem on the handle bars. I felt a little too stretched out.

I was flying solo for dinner yet again but no frozen meal for me tonight. I was inspired by Caitlin’s lunch to cook some penne. I didn’t have all of the lovely fresh ingredients that went in her’s, but I made do with what I had.  I was happy with my dish. First I reduced some balsamic vinegar in my skillet then added olive oil, diced onion, garlic, and eggplant until they were soft. Then I added cannelini beans and broccoli and some jarred sauce (I’m bad I know). Once everything was heated through I added a bit of lemon juice, salt, and spices. I topped it with nooch and stirred it up.

I also had three broken pieces of chocolate. Mmmm…

I had a crazy day, but it was great. I got to see a friend that I haven’t seen in months and spend some time with a friend that I won’t see for months.

After I posted last I got all ready to work out then the boy texted me wanting to meet for lunch. That sounded like fun and it was still early in the day so I got back in my regular clothes and headed out. Also, I wanted to get some stuff at the store he works at (yay discount bike rack and teva flippy floppies).  We went to Moe’s for lunch. I thought it was kinda fast food tasting I much prefer the non-chain joints that I have tried. Their tofu wasn’t that bad though and their green salsa is really good with lots of cilantro. I gave the bf most of my chips.

I also am holding a grudge against Moe’s because I spilled salsa on my pale khaki corduroy pants. I know that its not fair to blame Moe’s, but they yell campy scripted stuff at their patrons so they deserve it.

Then I helped my friend who is moving and came home to exercise.  I enjoyed it today, I really pushed myself. It is the last week before the rest week. During/After working out I had some tropical Cytomax. I only had a sip because it was grossly sweet. The powder smelled really good, but the liquid was just…bleh. I think that it might be ok diluted many times more than the suggested 16 oz. I will let you know what if it improves or has any magical recovery effects.

After working out I microwave an indian meal I got at the discount grocery. Sukhi’s brand Mattar Tofu with a piece of naan. I had never seen naan in a frozen meal before. It was pretty good, but the meal wasn’t very filling.

Check out the clashing colors! So ugly yet so cool. It is a 90’s model Concorde with a steel frame. I know that steel is heavier, but it also absorbs shock a lot better for a more comfortable ride. I bought it because it was fairly inexpensive and had nice components than I would be able to afford on a new bike. I haven’t been able to ride it much yet because it has been pouring the rain here, but you can be sure that I will be writing more about it as I learn. One thing is for sure, I am buying a new saddle as soon as possible. It is a crappy old one that puts all kinds of pressure on my nether reigions.
